At Ars Electronica 2022, one of the world&apos;s largest events in the field of art, cutting-edge technology, and culture, &apos;Ambient Weaving&apos; jointly developed by ZOZO NEXT Inc., the Yasuaki Kakehi Laboratory at UTokyo, and Hosoo Co., Ltd., was awarded the Honorary Mention in the STARTS (Innovation at the Nexus of Science, Technology, and the ARTS) category. How was &apos;Ambient Weaving&apos; exhibited at Ars Electronica 2022, held from September 7 to 11 in Linz, Austria&apos;s third-largest city after Vienna and Graz, and how was it evaluated by the visitors? Here&apos;s a report. Located about 150km west of Vienna along the Danube River, Linz is a city of about 200,000 people. The city is dedicated to promoting contemporary art and was designated as a European Capital of Culture in 2009 and a UNESCO City of Creativity in 2014.

<h2 id="hc083dd4331">A large-scale event held for the first time in three years, attracting many visitors from Japan</h2>The Ars Electronica, which started in 1979 as part of the International Bruckner Festival, began to be held as an independent event from 1986. The scale expanded in 1996 when the Ars Electronica Center, which functions as a museum and an art museum, and the Ars Electronica Future Lab, a research institute, were established. Due to the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, the event has been held mainly online for the past two years, but this year it returned to a large-scale on-site event for the first time in three years. This year&apos;s main venue was Johannes Kepler University. The previous venue used before the pandemic had become outdated, so the main venue was changed. Exhibitions were also held at other venues in Linz, including the Ars Electronica Center and the Lentos Art Museum.

The &apos;Ambient Weaving&apos; exhibition was held inside the main venue, Johannes Kepler University. Setup began two days before the opening date. Preparation was proceeded with local procurement of materials like wood, and minor adjustments to the exhibition&apos;s spacing and lighting were made according to the size and brightness of the exhibition space. The start of Ars Electronica 2022 was at 10 am on September 7th. Even before the start time, artists from other booths came to see &apos;Ambient Weaving&apos;, indicating a high level of interest in the Honorary Mention-winning piece. The attendees were mainly from Europe, but there were also many from Japan. A tour was organized from Japan especially to visit Ars Electronica 2022, and many businesspeople visited the event. The &apos;Ambient Weaving&apos; exhibition was conducted with three works. The first work, &apos;Wave of Warmth,&apos; uses a Leuco Dye that changes color with heat, visualizing invisible environmental information through the medium of fabric. The second work, &apos;Drifting Colors,&apos; involves weaving special tubes into the weft of the fabric, and the color changes as water containing dye seeps into these tubes. This piece uses a technique called chromatography. When color water is sucked up from the edge of the fabric, the colors are separated inside the thread, creating color patterns. The third work is &apos;Woven Glow,&apos; which uses a luminescent material that glows when electrified, woven in the form of a foil. This luminescent material is woven into the weft, and by controlling it with a computer, the pattern of the fabric can be switched like an animation.

<h2 id="h294fbbbdf0">How did visitors evaluate &apos;Ambient Weaving&apos;?</h2>How did each piece appear to the visitors who came to the venue? Some of the comments we gathered at the venue are as follows. In response to &apos;Wave of Warmth&apos;: &quot;Wave of Warmth is very beautiful. The change in color aligns with the expression of waves, and I was surprised.&quot; &quot;This method of expression, which combines traditional crafts, textiles, and art, is rare and beautiful.&quot; &quot;I knew about color-changing dyes, but this is a new use. The ability to express beautiful fabrics through a combination with traditional crafts is wonderful.&quot; &quot;It would be interesting if we could create colors and patterns according to the seasons as a living fabric.&quot; &quot;I want to buy it! How much is this? Lol&quot; Visitors who experienced the demonstration of color change by placing their hand on the fabric were uniformly surprised, and it seemed to attract the interest of companies related to textiles and designers.

In response to &apos;Woven Glow&apos;: &quot;It’s interesting as an experience to have interactions change in synchronization with the sound.&quot; &quot;It might be more interesting if it changes to full color.&quot; &quot;It would be nice if it could be vivid colors and animations for parties, clubs, and discos, and calm colors and quiet animations when it&apos;s moody.&quot; We exhibited visual expressions synchronized with the sound of the loom, but we urgently introduced an interaction where the light changes when the sound in the exhibition hall is detected. This live feeling attracted many interested visitors.

芸術、先端技術、文化の祭典でメディアアートのイベントとしては世界最大級の規模を誇るアルスエレクトロニカ 2022のSTARTS（Innovation at the Nexus of Science, Technology, and the ARTS）部門にて、株式会社ZOZO NEXTが東京大学筧康明研究室、株式会社 細尾とともに共同開発した「Ambient Weaving」がHonorary Mention（栄誉賞）を受賞。 9月7〜11日にウィーン、グラーツに次ぐオーストリア第3の都市であるリンツで開催されたアルスエレクトロニカ2022で、「Ambient Weaving」はどのように展示され、来場者たちからどのように評価されたのか。その模様をレポートする。 ウィーンから西に約150km、ドナウ川沿いにあるリンツは、人口約20万人の都市。現代芸術の振興に力を注いでおり、2009年には欧州文化都市に、2014年にはユネスコの創造都市に指定されている。

<h2 id="hc304a376b6">3年ぶりの大規模開催。日本からも多くの来場者が</h2>1979年にインターナショナル・ブルックナー・フェスティバルの一環として始まったアルスエレクトロニカは、1986年から独立したイベントとして開催されるようになった。1996年には美術館・博物館としての機能を持つアルスエレクトロニカセンター、研究機関のアルスエレクトロニカフューチャーラボが作られ、規模が拡大。コロナ禍の影響により、過去2年間はオンライン中心の開催となっていたが、今年は3年ぶりにオンサイトでの大規模開催となった。 今回のメイン会場はヨハネス・ケプラー大学。コロナ禍前に使用していた場所の老朽化などが理由で、メイン会場が変更となった。ヨハネス・ケプラー大学以外にもリンツ市内にあるアルスエレクトロニカセンター、レントス美術館などでも展示が行われた。

「Ambient Weaving」の展示が行われたのは、メイン会場のヨハネス・ケプラー大学内。開催日の2日前から設営がスタート。現地で木材調達などをしながら準備が進められ、展示スペースの広さ、明るさに合わせ、展示の間隔やライティングの微調整が行われた。 アルスエレクトロニカ 2022のスタートは9月7日の10時。開始時間前から他ブースの展示をしていたアーティストが「Ambient Weaving」を見にきており、Honorary Mention受賞作への関心の高さが窺えた。来場者はヨーロッパの人々がメインながら、日本人も多い。日本からアルスエレクトロニカ 2022を訪れるためのツアーも組まれており、たくさんのビジネスパーソンが訪れていた。 今回の「Ambient Weaving」の展示は3作品で行われた。１つは熱によって色が変わるロイコ染料を用いた“Wave of Warmth”という作品。温度という目に見えない環境情報が、織物を通して可視化される。 2つ目は、布の緯糸に特殊なチューブを織り込み、その中に色素の入った水が染み込んでいくことで色が変わる“Drifting Colors”という作品。クロマトグラフィーという技法を応用したもので、布の端から色水を吸い上げると、糸の中で色が分離され、色のパターンが生成される。 そして3つ目は、通電することで発光する素材を箔状にして織り込んだ“Woven Glow”という作品。緯糸にEL（エレクトロルミネセンス）の素材を織り込んで、それをコンピューターで制御することでアニメーションのように布の柄を切り替えられる。

<h2 id="h8f5aff32ae">来場者たちは「Ambient Weaving」をどう評価したのか</h2>会場を訪れた人にはそれぞれの作品がどのように見えたのか。会場で拾った声を記しておく。 “Wave of Warmth”について。 「Wave of Warmthは非常に美しい。色が変わる様子が、波の表現としても一致していて、驚かされた」 「伝統工芸とテキスタイルとアートを組み合わせたようなこの表現方法は珍しいし、美しかった」 「色が変わる染料は知っていたが、こういった使い方は新しい。伝統工芸との組み合わせによって美しい布が表現できるのは素晴らしい」 「リビングファブリックとして季節に合わせた色やパターンを作れたら面白そう」 「ぜひ購入したい！　これはいくらなんだ？笑」 布の上に手を置いて色が変わるデモンストレーションを体験した来場者は一様に驚いており、テキスタイル関連の企業やデザイナーも興味を持った様子だった。

“Drifting Colors”について。 「サステナブルな表現でとても印象深い」 「壁面に飾るととても美しいと思う」 「自分の気に入った柄を作れる素敵な仕組み」 ライブドローイングを行っていたこともあり、複数日観にくる来場者が多かった作品。来場者がたくさんの写真を撮影していたことも印象的だった。

“Woven Glow”について。 「音と連動してインタラクションが変わるのは体験として面白い」 「フルカラーに変化したらもっと面白いかもしれない」 「パーティーやクラブ、ディスコでは派手な色とアニメーションで、ムーディーな時は落ち着いた色と静かなアニメーションにできると嬉しい」 織機の音に連動したビジュアル表現を展示していたが、展示場内での音を検知すると、光り方が変わるインタラクションを急遽導入。そのライブ感によって興味を持った来場者も多かった。

来場者からも注目を集め、高い評価を得た「Ambient Weaving」。アルスエレクトロニカ 2022でのHonorary Mention受賞を1つの通過点として、このプロジェクトがさらに飛躍していくことに期待したい。

What Impression did 'Ambient Weaving' Leave on the Visitors? A Report from Ars Electronica 2022

Ars Electronica, held in Linz, Austria, is a festival of art, technology, and culture, boasting one of the largest scales in the world for a media art event. At the STARTS (Innovation at the Nexus of Science, Technology, and the ARTS) division of Ars Electronica 2022, held from September 7 to 11, &apos;Ambient Weaving&apos; developed in collaboration by ZOZO NEXT Inc., the Yasuaki Kokehi Laboratory at UTokyo, and Hosoo Co., Ltd., won an Honorary Mention (House of Honour), a respectable award. Following conversations with <a href="https://fashiontechnews.zozo.com/projects/ars_electronica_2022/ars_electronica_nakamaru/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">Satoshi Nakamaru</a>, who led the project at ZOZO NEXT Inc., <a href="https://fashiontechnews.zozo.com/projects/ars_electronica_2022/ars_electronica_kakei/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">Yasuaki Kakehi</a>, who leads the Yasuaki Kakehi Laboratory at UTokyo, we spoke with Masataka Hosoo, the representative of Hosoo Co., Ltd.

<h5 id="h1c95920c8c">Could you please share your thoughts on &apos;Ambient Weaving&apos;, the winning work this time from the perspective of Hosoo Co., Ltd.? How do you view the relationship with &apos;Nishijin-ori&apos;, a traditional art form of Kyoto?</h5>Regardless of the matter at hand, when Hosoo takes on something, within the 1200-year history of Nishijin-ori, the question of &quot;Why are we doing this now?&quot; naturally arises. A persistent pursuit of the &apos;ultimate beauty&apos;, and continuing to answer the fundamental question, &apos;What is beauty?&apos;, has been consistent throughout the 1000- and 500-year-old histories. Many different technologies have emerged within this context. In light of this, I feel it&apos;s somewhat of a mission to be able to answer such questions. Also, originally, we had the idea of exploiting the characteristics of Nishijin-ori, which can weave a wide variety of materials into complex structures, to incorporate cutting-edge materials. In the context of the modern day, when we thought about how to output this idea, we thought of putting on an exhibit that would use &apos;textile&apos;, which has been present between the environment and people since time immemorial, to rediscover the relationship between people and their environment.

<h2 id="h11700d49e4">A project that allows you to feel the unseen event of environmental change through beauty</h2><h5 id="h5607587be3">Could you please share your thoughts on winning the award?</h5>I&apos;m very honoured that our challenging initiative of collaboration between craft and technology was recognized. <h5 id="h15eba4394d">What are the unique features of this project (from the perspective of Hosoo Co., Ltd)?</h5>I think a significant part of this project is that by exhibiting the external environment itself beautifully through textiles, one can not only see something architecturally beautiful but also feel the invisible event of environmental change through beauty. In this exhibition, I believe we were able to represent that you can notice the minor changes if you change the way you pay attention and process information. For instance, you can enjoy the slight changes in scenery due to the seasons and climate even while walking the same path every day. I think this leads to a kind of mental richness.

<h5 id="h7d084fda14">Please share your thoughts on exhibiting at Ars Electronica 2022.</h5>I think it&apos;s very meaningful to have people around the world see this initiative.<h2 id="ha759f4de21">I want to maintain a posture of venturing into new challenges</h2><h5 id="hf8aa43f371">Can you tell us about your usual activities? Do you collaborate with other industries as well?</h5>I am always exploring new possibilities in weaving and continuing to challenge myself. In recent years, I have embarked on the industry&apos;s first attempt to introduce Nishijin-ori as a standard material for vehicle interiors by collaborating with Lexus. When I first received the offer, I thought it would be impossible. High durability and flame resistance are required for automobile interior materials, and I thought it would be very difficult to realize these with textiles. However, due to my strong desire to overcome the barriers between industrial and craft products and create something new, I decided to take on this collaboration. The feeling of accomplishment when we finally succeeded in implementing the new material after four years of development is unforgettable.

Last year, we unveiled the collection &apos;Heritage Nova&apos;, incorporating &apos;hemp&apos;, a material never before woven into the history of Nishijin-ori. Hemp has been used in sacred rituals for ten thousand years. When I came into contact with hemp cloth from the Edo period (1603-1868), I was struck by its texture, which was very different from my preconception. I was extremely impressed to learn that hemp cloth, which I had envisaged as being hard and stiff, could be so white and soft. It was a moment of discovering something new within something old. Weaving hemp thread, which has been with humanity for ten thousand years, into the history of Nishijin allowed us to connect to the heritage of Nishijin-ori weaving. We utilized the unique texture created by hemp and silk, and highlighted it through Hosoo&apos;s intricate structures and three-dimensional expressions. This collection was displayed at Salone del Mobile in Milan this June, where it was highly acclaimed internationally. We want to remain open to new challenges and continue various developments.

<h5 id="h2773e50a79">Could you tell us about this project and your future outlook?</h5>The integration of technology and materials at a higher level, and the harmony between the textile produced and the environment or body. I think the question of how these two axes intersect will continue to be a theme moving forward. Considering that cloth is always between the body and the environment, it can be perceived as a &apos;second skin&apos;. As in this work, cloth can enhance bodily functions, or the cloth itself as a shelter can expand into space, potentially functioning as a &apos;third skin&apos; like architecture. Either way, rather than just focusing on the textile itself, I believe we need to explore new possibilities as a membrane to transform the body, or the space. <h5 id="h1fe58bd362">Please share your thoughts on your partner company, ZOZO NEXT Inc., and the Yasuaki Kakehi Laboratory at UTokyo.</h5>Being able to exhibit and announce our endeavor as &apos;Ambient Weaving&apos;, and being honored with an esteemed award, I believe, is thanks to the wonderful technology and expertise of ZOZO NEXT and Professor Kakehi. Beyond this exhibition, I hope we can continue to face future challenges together. I am very much looking forward to seeing how Nishijin-ori evolves and what it will become as it fuses with modern technology.

After graduating college, he engaged in music activities and worked in the jewelry industry before joining Hosoo Co., Ltd. in 2008.In 2012, he initiated the project &apos;GO ON&apos; with other young successors of traditional crafts in Kyoto. He actively pursues the further expansion of textile possibilities through the integration of Nishijin-ori and cutting-edge technologies.

<h5 id="hac4fc1da38">今回の受賞作である「Ambient Weaving」について、株式会社 細尾の視点での想いをお聞かせください。京都伝統の「西陣織」という伝統工芸との関係性についてはどうお考えでしょうか。</h5>何事においても、細尾として何かに取り組む際に、西陣織の1200年の歴史のなかで、「なぜ今これをやるのか」という問いは自ずと生まれてきます。1000年前、500年前と変わらない「究極の美の追求」 「美とは何か」という本質的な問いに答え続ける。その中でさまざまな技術が生まれてきた。それを踏まえると、このような問いに答えることはある種の使命のようにも感じるんです。 また、元々、多種多様なマテリアルを複雑な構造で織り込むことができるという西陣織の特性を活かし、先端的なマテリアルを織り込めないかという発想がありました。 現代のコンテクストにおいて、この発想をどのようにアウトプットするかということを考えたときに、有史以来、 環境と人との間に在り続けた「織物」を用いて、人と環境との関係性を再発見するような展示を開催しようと思いました。

<h2 id="h9e38878d7f">美を通して環境の変化という目に見えない事象を感じることができるプロジェクト</h2><h5 id="h2324ba8b64">受賞した感想をお聞かせ頂けますでしょうか。</h5>工芸とテクノロジーの協業という挑戦的な取り組みが評価されたことを、非常に光栄に思います。 <h5 id="h584dbc851e">（株式会社 細尾からの視点で）今回のプロジェクトの醍醐味とはどんなものだったでしょうか。</h5>テキスタイルを通して外部環境そのものを美しく展示することで、単に意匠的に美しいものを見るだけでなく、美を通して環境の変化という目に見えない事象を感じることができる、という点が大きいかと思います。 今回の展示では、意識の向け方や情報を感じ取るプロセスを変えるだけで些細な変化に気づくことができる、ということを表現できたかと思います。毎日同じ道を歩いていると、季節や気候による景色の微細な変化を楽しむことができる。そのような精神的な豊かさにもつながるのかなと思っています。

<h5 id="h608851a226">アルスエレクトロニカ 2022での出展についての想いをお聞かせください。</h5>この取り組みを世界中の方々にご覧いただくことは非常に意味のあることと考えています。<h2 id="h7d18bc0dd1">新たなる挑戦への姿勢を常に持ち続けたい</h2><h5 id="h02bbfce137">普段の活動についてお聞かせください。他業界とのコラボレーションなども行っているのでしょうか。</h5>常に織物の新たな可能性を模索し、挑戦を続けています。近年では、レクサスと協業し、西陣織を標準素材として車両内装に取り入れる業界では初の試みに挑戦しました。初めてオファーをいただいた時は、不可能だと思いました。自動車の内装材には高い耐久性や不燃性が必要であり、そのような素材を織物で実現することはとても困難だと思ったからです。しかし、工業品と工芸品の垣根を超え、新しいものを生み出したいという強い思いから、このコラボレーションに取り組むことを決意しました。実に4年かけて新素材を開発し、遂に実装に至った時の感動は忘れられません。

また、昨年は、西陣織の歴史の中でまだ織り込まれたことのない「ヘンプ」を使用したコレクション「Heritage Nova」を発表しました。ヘンプは古来より神事に用いられ、1万年の歴史を持っています。江戸期の大麻布に触れた時、自分のイメージとは全く異なるその質感に衝撃を受けました。固くゴワゴワしていると思っていた大麻布が、これほど白く、柔らかいものであると知り非常に感銘を受けました。古いものの中に新しいものを見出した瞬間でした。 1万年前から人類と共にあった大麻の糸を、西陣の歴史に織り込むことで、西陣織の連綿たるヘリテージへと接続し、ヘンプとシルクが生み出す特有の質感を、細尾ならではの複雑な構造による立体的な表現で織り上げました。このコレクションは、今年6月に開催されたミラノサローネにも出展し、海外でも高い評価をいただきました。新たなる挑戦への姿勢を常に持ち、さまざまな開発を続けていきたいと思っています。

<h5 id="he20a981995">今回のプロジェクトについて、今後の展望を教えて頂けますでしょうか。</h5>技術と素材のより高いレベルでの融合とそれにより生まれたテキスタイルと環境あるいは身体との調和。この2軸をどう交わらせるかが今後もテーマになってくると思います。布は常に身体と環境の間にあると考えると、「第2の皮膚」とも捉えることができます。今回の作品のように、布が身体機能を拡張する。あるいは シェルターとしての布そのものが空間に拡張し、「第3の皮膚」として建築のような役割を果たすことも考えられます。いずれにせよ、テキスタイルそのものだけに注目するのではなく、身体、あるいは空間を変容させるための膜として新たな可能性を見出す必要があるのだと思います。 <h5 id="hf2154248f4">パートナー企業である株式会社ZOZO NEXT、および東京大学筧康明研究室に対する想いをお聞かせください。</h5>今回の取り組みを「Ambient Weaving」として展示発表し、光栄な賞をいただけたのは、ZOZO NEXTさん、筧さんの素晴らしい技術と知見のおかげだと思っています。この展示に留まらず、ぜひこの挑戦をその先へと共に進めていければと思っています。 西陣織が現代のテクノロジーと融合しながら、今後どんな姿を見せてくれるのか。非常に楽しみだ。

Kyoto's Traditional 'Nishijin-ori' Weaving Merges with Cutting-edge Technology in 'Ambient Weaving' to Explore the Ultimate Beauty

Ars Electronica, held in Linz, Austria, is one of the world&apos;s largest media art events, celebrating art, cutting-edge technology, and culture. At the &apos;STARTS (Innovation at the Nexus of Science, Technology, and the ARTS) Prize 2022,&apos; aimed at promoting collaborative practices of science and technology in the art sector, &apos;Ambient Weaving,&apos; co-developed by ZOZO NEXT Inc., Yasuaki Kakehi Laboratory of UTokyo, and Hosoo Co., Ltd., was honored with the Honorary Mention and will be exhibited at Ars Electronica 2022, held from September 7 to 11. Following <a href="https://fashiontechnews.zozo.com/projects/ars_electronica_2022/ars_electronica_nakamaru/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">the interview with Satoshi Nakamaru, who was in charge of this project at ZOZO NEXT</a>, we had a chance to hear from Professor Yasuaki Kakehi, who leads the Yasuaki Kakehi Laboratory at UTokyo.

<h5 id="h45cb10c843">Could you tell us about &apos;Ambient Weaving,&apos; which won theHonorary Mentionat Ars Electronica, and share what you strongly focused on, such as the concept of the work, how it&apos;s presented, expressive aspects, etc.?</h5>&apos;Ambient Weaving&apos; is a project that seeks new possibilities in fabrics by overlaying cutting-edge materials and their manufacturing and control technologies with traditional crafts and aesthetics. Especially in this project, we have been working on incorporating invisible environmental factors, such as heat, humidity, and flow, into the fabric. It&apos;s a prototyped attempt to address how fabrics can serve as an interface between people and the environment, and how fabrics can act naturally as part of environmental factors from various perspectives.

<h5 id="h27934ec022">Could you share your thoughts on receiving the award?</h5>I&apos;m deeply honored. The STARTS Prize recognizes projects that have demonstrated advanced outputs, not from one-sided approach of either art or science, but by enhancing both. In this regard, it&apos;s encouraging that the jury appreciated our project&apos;s aims of both technological advancement and aesthetic perfection.

<h2 id="h9ee15a73bc">A Wealth of Solutions to Challenges is the Essence of Collaboration</h2><h5 style="text-align: justify" id="hcec50b85be">From your perspective, what was the charm of this project and the unique pleasure of collaboration?</h5>In a collaboration that includes experts in technology, techniques, and expression, the ways to overcome challenges are varied, and I&apos;m always surprised and enjoying the process of finding such a solution. Also, thanks to the longtime collaboration, the artisans can think of research ideas, the engineers learn weaving techniques, spin threads, and so on, so we can interact beyond our existing expertise. I find it wonderful to witness such growth and the emergence of new specialties. <h5 id="hf49b244a20">Could you share your eagerness or thoughts for the exhibition?</h5>Ars Electronica is an important opportunity for us to present the research or works we are most proud of each year. Especially since we couldn&apos;t participate physically due to COVID-19 in recent years, I&apos;m looking forward to attending the festival after a long time. I&apos;m excited to see what kind of feedback we receive and what kind of chemical reactions occur when this project catches the eyes of cutting-edge, creative people around the world. <h5 id="h235227bdb0">Could you tell us about your usual research at the Kakehi Laboratory at UTokyo?</h5>In the Kakehi Lab, we carry out research on media design and interaction, especially focusing on the characteristics of physical materials. We develop physical interfaces and displays incorporating materials that change in shape, color, and softness. Also, since we have many artists and designers among our members, we also work on installations that interact with non-human entities such as plants and organisms, and resonate with the environmental factors of the land. At this year&apos;s Ars Electronica, in addition to &apos;Ambient Weaving,&apos; we are also planning to present three works under the theme &apos;Interverse of Things&apos; as a research lab.

<h2 id="hd14c3bc250">I would also like to explore how it can be integrated into society as a product</h2><h5 id="hd1478ab24e">Could you tell us your future prospects for &quot;Ambient Weaving&quot; from your perspective, Professor Kakehi?</h5>As the future prospects for &quot;Ambient Weaving&quot;, one aspect is to enhance and explore the completion level of the ongoing prototype. I am constantly seeking improvements in expression, such as finding a way to respond more delicately to environmental information, and a way to weave that fits more into the design of Nishijin-ori. Also, I would love to examine how it can be linked to various contexts and applications to be integrated into society as a product. Moreover, we are continuously prototyping for function proposals and expression proposals using more materials and phenomena we are good at. We plan to continue this, involving new members, and hope to have an opportunity to disclose this in the near future. <h5 id="hb66bd13772">Please share your thoughts on your partnership with ZOZO NEXT Inc. and Hosoo Co., Ltd.</h5>Membership in ZOZO NEXT includes trusted experts in material sciences and chemistry. They continuously bring a business and social implementation perspective to the project. I am grateful that they consistently understand and have high expectations for such an experimental project.The team at Hosoo is a group of experts who are always tirelessly pursuing beauty. Whether our work can reach the level of perfection that meets their standards is one of our benchmarks. We never run out of perspectives that we can learn from our collaboration with them, such as contributions to Japanese culture and historical positions. While the &quot;Honorary Mention&quot; at Ars Electronica&apos;s &quot;STARTS Prize 2022&quot; in 2022 is a milestone, it can also be said to be a passing point for the &quot;Ambient Weaving&quot; project. I look forward to seeing how it will be updated moving forward, and what will come out of the project. I would like to continue to pay attention.

オーストリアのリンツで開催されるアルエレクトロニカは、芸術、先端技術、文化の祭典で、メディアアートのイベントとしては世界最大級の規模を誇る。アート領域における実践的な科学やテクノロジーのコラボレーションの推進を目的に実施している賞「STARTS（Innovation at the Nexus of Science, Technology, and the ARTS）Prize 2022」にて、株式会社ZOZO NEXTが東京大学筧康明研究室、株式会社 細尾とともに共同開発した「Ambient Weaving」がHonorary Mention（栄誉賞）を受賞し、9月7〜11日に開催されるアルスエレクトロニカ 2022に出展することになった。 ZOZO NEXTでこのプロジェクトを担当した<a style="color:#000000" href="https://fashiontechnews.zozo.com/projects/ars_electronica_2022/ars_electronica_nakamaru/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">中丸啓氏へのインタビュー</a>に続き、今回は東京大学筧康明研究室を率いる筧康明氏に話を聞いた。

<h5 id="h8bf2559de5">アルスエレクトロニカでHonorary Mention（栄誉賞）を受賞した「Ambient Weaving」について、作品のコンセプト、見せ方、表現部分などで強く意識した点などを教えてください。</h5>「Ambient Weaving」は、先端的な素材やその製造・制御技術と、伝統工芸の技や美を重ね合わせ、新しい布の可能性を探求するプロジェクトです。特にこのプロジェクトでは、熱や湿度、流れなど見えない環境要素（Ambient Factors）を布に織り込むことに取り組みました。いかに布が人と環境とのインタフェースとなり、また布が環境要素の一部として自然に作用するかという問いを、さまざまな観点からプロトタイプしたものです。

<h5 id="h2324ba8b64">受賞した感想をお聞かせ頂けますでしょうか。</h5>とても光栄に感じています。STARTS Prizeは、芸術・科学のどちらか片方ではなく、両方のアプローチから高め合い、先進的なアウトプットを示したプロジェクトを顕彰する賞です。その点で、本プロジェクトが目指していた技術的先進性と美的完成度の両立を、審査員の皆さまに評価いただけたのは自信になります。

<h2 id="haa5ae59914">課題に対する乗り越え方のバリエーションが豊富な点がコラボレーションの醍醐味</h2><h5 style="text-align:justify" id="h273c416b3f">（筧先生の視点で）今回のプロジェクトについて。コラボレーションならではの醍醐味とはどんなものだったでしょうか。</h5>技術・技法・表現のそれぞれの専門家がいるコラボレーションで、課題に対する乗り越え方のバリエーションが多彩で、常にそんな方法があったかと驚き、楽しみながら取り組むことができています。また、長い期間コラボレーションを続けてきたおかげで、職人が研究のアイディアを思いついたり、技術者が織り方を習得したり糸を紡いだりと、互いの既存の専門を超えた交流ができるようになり、そんな成長や新たな専門性の芽生えを感じられることも醍醐味です。 <h5 id="h06f6666de7">出展に対する意気込みや出展に向けての想いがありましたらお聞かせください。</h5>アルスエレクトロニカは、僕らにとっても毎年のようにその年の最も自信のある作品や研究を発表する重要な機会です。特にCOVID-19でこの数年は物理参加ができなかっただけに久しぶりのフェスティバル参加を楽しみにしています。このプロジェクトが世界中の先端的でクリエイティブな人々の目に触れた時に、どのようなフィードバックを得られて、化学反応に繋がるのかを楽しみにしています。 <h5 id="hed39cf6721">東京大学筧康明研究室での普段の研究についてお聞かせください。</h5>筧研究室では、特に物理素材の特性に注目したメディアデザインやインタラクションに関する研究を展開しています。形が変わる、色が変わる、柔らかさが変わる素材を組み込んだフィジカルインタフェースやディスプレイなどを開発しています。また、アーティストやデザイナーもメンバーに多くおり、植物や生物などNon-Humanと言われる存在とのインタラクションや、その土地の環境要素と呼応するインスタレーションなど、作品展開も行っています。今回のアルスエレクトロニカでも、「Ambient Weaving」の他に、研究室として「Interverse of Things」というテーマで3作品の発表を予定しています。

<h2 id="h85eea0cd79">プロダクトとしてどう社会に組み込めるかも検討したい</h2><h5 id="hf4719ef32b">（筧先生の視点で）「Ambient Weaving」の今後の展望を教えてください。</h5>今後の「Ambient Weaving」の展望として、一つは進行中のプロトタイプの完成度向上・探求があります。より繊細に環境情報に呼応する方法はないか、より西陣織の意匠に溶け込む織り方はないか、と表現面で追いたい要素は尽きません。また、プロダクトとして社会に組み込むために、どのような文脈や用途と結びつけることが可能かという点も是非検討したいと思っています。 そして、何より僕らが得意とするさらなる素材や現象を利用した機能提案や表現提案のプロトタイピングは、新たなメンバーも交えながら継続的に行っており、また近いうちに披露できる機会が設けられればと考えています。 <h5 id="hf0526869db">パートナー企業である株式会社ZOZO NEXT、および株式会社 細尾に対する想いをお聞かせてください。</h5>ZOZO NEXTには信頼する材料科学や化学の専門家が所属しています。そしてプロジェクトに対して常にビジネスや社会実装の視点を持ち込んでくれます。これほど実験的なプロジェクトに常に理解を示し、期待をかけてくださることに感謝しています。 細尾の皆さんは常に飽くなき美の探求を行う専門家集団です。彼らの伝統に足り得る完成度かどうかは僕らの指標の一つです。日本文化への貢献や歴史的位置付けなど、彼らとのコラボレーションから学べる視点は尽きません。 アルスエレクトロニカ2022の「STARTS Prize 2022」でのHonorary Mention（栄誉賞）は、一つの到達点ではあるものの、「Ambient&nbsp; Weaving」プロジェクトにとっては通過点とも言える。今後、どのようにアップデートされ、プロジェクトを通してどんなものが生まれてくるのか。引き続き注目していきたい。

Delving into the Project 'Ambient Weaving' that Incorporates Invisible Environmental Factors into Fabric

Ars Electronica, an arts, advanced technology, and cultural festival held in Linz, Austria, is one of the world&apos;s largest media art events. At the STARTS (Innovation at the Nexus of Science, Technology, and the ARTS) section of Ars Electronica 2022, held from September 7 to 11, &apos;Ambient Weaving,&apos; co-developed by ZOZO NEXT Inc. in collaboration with Yasuaki Kakehi Laboratory at UTokyo and Hosoo Co., Ltd., received an Honorary Mention. But what is &apos;Ambient Weaving&apos;? We spoke to Satoshi Nakamaru, who led the project at ZOZO NEXT, to find out more. &apos;Ambient Weaving&apos; combines cutting-edge digital technology with traditional Nishijin-ori weaving techniques, creating textiles that express environmental information, and embody the environment itself. Ars Electronica 2022 will feature three pieces from the project.

<h2 id="h9a0c8b1062">A Fusion of Traditional Craft and Advanced Technology</h2>&quot;One of them is a work called &apos;Wave of Warmth&apos; that uses thermochromic dye, which changes color with heat. It visualizes the invisible environmental information, temperature, through the medium of textile.&quot; For instance, if you wore an item made from a similar fabric to &apos;Wave of Warmth&apos;, the fabric could change color depending on whether you are indoors or outdoors, day or night, the season, or even the temperature difference between your departure and arrival locations during travel.

&quot;&apos;Drifting Colors&apos; is a piece in which we wove a special tube into the weft of the fabric, and the color changes as water containing dye seeps into the tube. Employing a technique known as chromatography, color patterns are created as the dye separates within the threads as the colored water is drawn up from the edge of the fabric. When clear water is drawn up, the fabric returns to its original white color.&quot; The color patterns can be changed repeatedly and shift moment by moment, influenced by environmental factors such as humidity. It&apos;s a piece of textile that seems to come straight out of a science fiction world.

&quot;The third piece is &apos;Woven Glow.&apos; We&apos;ve woven luminescent material in a foil-like form into this piece. By integrating electro-luminescent (EL) material into the weft and controlling it with a computer, the patterns of the fabric can be switched like an animation.&quot; EL technology is familiarly used in devices like thin-panel televisions. A textile that glows in programmed patterns is certainly eye-catching and impactful.

What kind of exhibitions are planned for these three pieces at Ars Electronica? &quot;All three pieces, &apos;Wave of Warmth,&apos; &apos;Drifting Colors,&apos; and &apos;Woven Glow,&apos; are designed to highlight changes based on environmental factors and time. &apos;Wave of Warmth&apos; changes color with temperature, &apos;Drifting Colors&apos; with water, and &apos;Woven Glow&apos; with electricity. Another unique aspect is that the time scales of change for each piece vary. We hope to organize exhibits that present different faces depending on the timing of the visit.&quot; In fact, &apos;Ambient Weaving&apos; was also exhibited at SXSW (South by Southwest) 2022, held in Texas, USA, in March this year, and received high acclaim. Now, the project has won an Honorary Mention at Ars Electronica. What&apos;s next for &apos;Ambient Weaving&apos;? &quot;Both SXSW and Ars Electronica are events that attract attention from numerous creators, artists, and businesses, and we feel that this award has great significance. In particular, winning pieces at Ars Electronica are archived as catalogs.Moreover, we&apos;ve already been approached about potential applications for the &apos;Ambient Weaving&apos; textiles. While I can&apos;t go into details, we might see these textiles appearing not just in clothing, but also in daily life in the near future.&quot;

<h2 id="hfd894c2e5a">The Project Continues, As Research and Development for New Works Progress</h2>&quot;Ambient Weaving&quot; is a collaborative project of ZOZO NEXT Inc., the Yasuaki Kakehi Laboratory at UTokyo, and Hosoo Co., Ltd. What were the roles and cooperative efforts? &quot;Hosoo Co., Ltd. is an established Nishijin-ori brand. Naturally, they&apos;re in charge of the weaving process. Masataka Hosoo, the representative, is an expert on aesthetics with uncompromising dedication to expression. He has a clear vision for the works, which helped us greatly due to its unshakeable consistency. We&apos;ve borrowed both technological development and expressive elements from the Yasuaki Kakehi Laboratory at UTokyo. Professor Yasuaki Kakehi is a media artist and researcher and provided valuable advice from both perspectives. And we primarily handle the technology aspects.&quot; The &quot;Ambient Weaving&quot; project is set to continue into the future. In addition to research and development for new works, there are plans for updates on previously produced works, as well as technological development for implementing those works in society. It will be interesting to see what the fusion of traditional crafts and technology will yield in the future.

Researcher. Satoshi Nakamaru belongs to a division at ZOZO NEXT responsible for developing new technologies and commercializing them. He holds a doctorate in Public Policy and Media. His specialties include the development of soft functional materials and devices, and the design of interactions and UX using these. He also exhibits his work at venues such as the Ars Electronica Festival, with a focus on technical areas like papers and patents. He is the recipient of the ACM DIS 2019 Best Paper award among others.

<h2 id="h520c79cce2">伝統工芸と最新テクノロジーが融合</h2>「ひとつは熱によって色が変わるロイコ染料を用いた“Wave of Warmth”という作品になります。温度という目に見えない環境情報が、織物を通して可視化されるということになります」 たとえば“Wave of Warmth”と同様の織物を身に纏えば、屋内にいるときと屋外にいるときで、昼と夜で、季節によって、旅行の出発地と到着地で色が変わるなんてことが起こるというわけだ。

「“Drifting Colors”は、布の緯糸に特殊なチューブを織り込み、その中に色素の入った水が染み込んでいくことで色が変わるという作品です。クロマトグラフィーという技法を応用したもので、布の端から色水を吸い上げると、糸の中で色が分離され、色のパターンが生成されます。そして透明な水を吸い上げると、元の白い布に戻ります」 何度も色を変えることができ、色のパターンは湿度などの環境の影響を受けながら刻一刻と変化する。SFの世界に登場しそうな織物である。

「3つ目は“Woven Glow”という作品です。この作品には通電することで発光する素材を箔状にして織り込んであります。緯糸にEL（エレクトロルミネセンス）の素材を織り込んで、それをコンピューターで制御することでアニメーションのように布の柄を切り替えることができます」 ELは薄型テレビなどに活用されていることでもお馴染みの技術。プログラミングされたパターンで発光する織物というのは、キャッチーでインパクトがある。

今回の3作品。アルスエレクトロニカではどのような展示を予定しているのだろうか。 「“Wave of Warmth”、“Drifting Colors”、“Woven Glow”のいずれも環境や時間による変化が魅力の作品です。“Wave of Warmth”は温度、“Drifting Colors”は水、“Woven Glow”は電気によって色が変わります。また変化の時間軸がそれぞれで異なるのもユニークな点です。訪れるタイミングによって違う表情を見せる。そんな展示にしたいと思っています」 実はこの「Ambient Weaving」は、今年3月にアメリカ・テキサス州で開催された世界最大級のテクノロジーの祭典、SXSW（サウス・バイ・サウスウエスト）2022にも出展し、高い評価を得ている。そして、今回はアルスエレクトロニカで栄誉賞を受賞。今後はどのような展開が待っているのだろうか。 「SXSWもアルス・エレクトロニカも多くのクリエイター、アーティスト、企業が注目しているイベントで、今回の受賞には大きな価値があると感じています。特にアルス・エレクトロニカの受賞作品はカタログとしてアーカイブされます。また、既にAmbient Weavingの織物については応用に向けた問い合わせもいただいております。具体的には言えないのですが、衣服に限らず、将来身の回りの生活に現れる日も来るかもしれません」

<h2 id="hb5f09e1dad">プロジェクトは今後も継続。新たな作品の研究開発は続く</h2>「Ambient Weaving」はZOZO NEXT、東京大学筧康明研究室、 細尾のコラボレーションプロジェクト。どのような役割分担、共同作業があったのだろうか。 「株式会社 細尾様は西陣織の老舗。当然、織物に仕上げる作業は細尾様が担っています。また代表の細尾真孝氏は美に関するエキスパートで表現への妥協がない方。作品に対するビジョンもはっきり持たれていて、ブレがないのでとても助けられました。東京大学筧康明研究室様には技術開発、表現面の両方の力を借りています。筧康明先生はメディアアーティストであり、研究者でもあるので、両面から貴重な助言を頂いています。そして我々は主にテクノロジーの面を担当するという形ですね」 「Ambient Weaving」プロジェクトは今後も継続していく。新たな作品の研究開発とともに、これまでに制作した作品のアップデート、そしてプロジェクトで制作されたものを社会に実装するための技術開発も進められる予定だ。伝統工芸とテクノロジーの融合が今後どのようなものを生み出すのか、楽しみにしてきたい。

研究者。ZOZO NEXTで新規技術開発とその事業化を行う部署に所属。博士（政策・メディア）。柔らかな機能性素材やデバイスの開発と、それらを活用したインタラクション・UX設計を専門とする。論文や特許など技術領域を軸に、Ars Electronica Festival等での作品展示も展開する。ACM DIS 2019 Best Paperなどを受賞。

Exhibition of Three Honorary Mention Award-Winning Pieces from the "STARTS Prize 2022" that Garnered Attention at Overseas Exhibition

For two days from October 22 to 23, 2022, at the International Festival "Science and Art Hill 2022" held in Matsudo City, Chiba Prefecture, we exhibited our joint research project "Ambient Weaving".
 
 
Ambient Weaving is a concept born out of a joint research project between ZOZO NEXT Co.,Ltd., Professor Yasuaki Kakehi's Laboratory at the Graduate School of Information Science and Technology, the University of Tokyo, and Hosoo Co., Ltd. It refers to "textiles that express environmental information" and "textiles woven with the environment itself". In this exhibition, we premiered three works in the Kanto region: "Wave of Warmth", which changes design according to temperature, "Woven Glow", a self-luminous textile, and "Drifting Colors", which changes color multiple times using chromatographic techniques.
